🤷🏻‍♂️ Why your clients quit early—and how to stop it

Hi Coach,

For a long time, when I was coaching the They Ask You Answer clients, I heard things like, “Chris, thanks, you’ve been great, but I think we don’t need you anymore.”

They would quit the program far too early, just when we were about to make real, transformational progress.

It was incredibly frustrating.

Clients would stop early, and our work together would quickly unravel because it hadn’t taken root in their organisation.

Even worse, some clients would say they weren’t making enough progress or seeing the results they wanted—often because they were measuring the wrong things at the wrong time.

It used to drive me crazy.

If they stayed with me longer, I knew they’d see dramatic results and truly transform their companies.

And in hindsight, it’s obvious why they were quitting.

So, about five years ago, we went on a mission to build a program that would keep our clients engaged long enough to see the full benefits.

Here’s what we did:

  1. Clear progress: Clients needed to see they were making progress over time. Visibility on an increasing score kept them motivated and on track.
  2. Big picture clarity: We made sure the transformational outcome was crystal clear. Even when in the weeds, my clients knew exactly what they were working towards and why it mattered.
  3. High stakes: The problems we were solving and the pain points we addressed were significant and impactful, making the work a priority and worthwhile.
  4. Measurable outcomes: We set up clear metrics to show progress and highlight areas that still needed work. This showed clients that, while they were making strides, there was still more to achieve.

As a result, we put the resistance to bed, and our clients stayed with us for at least 12 months, often 18 months or more.

We were also able to increase the price of our coaching program to a six-figure package because it was now comprehensive, robust, and well-structured.

Clients got better results, and we gathered compelling case studies and success stories to share.

What about your coaching program?

What are the most common reasons your clients either don’t stay on the path or fail to reach a point of true transformation?

Are your clients seeing clear progress? Do they understand the big picture and the high stakes of what they’re working on? Are you measuring outcomes effectively?

I challenge you to reflect on these questions and consider how to build these elements into your coaching program to keep your clients engaged and achieve great results.

Hi Coach, I was recently a guest on Trevor Lee’s Better Presentations More Sales podcast, and it was a fantastic conversation you don’t want to miss. The episode is titled Don’t be a people pleaser, and we dove deep into the problem of people pleasing, especially in the context of delivering presentations. It’s a challenge I’ve been targeting, and there’s a lot I unpacked in this interview that I haven’t shared before. 🎧 Listen here: Don't be a people pleaser with Chris Marr One of the key...

Hi Coach, Thanks to those who responded with your thoughts on how you would handle the client situation I shared earlier. Now, I would like to explain how I actually responded and explain why this approach works. But first, let’s look at how a people pleaser and an authoritative coach might react differently. The people-pleaser response People pleasers often have a high need to be liked, and that can drive their behaviour in tough moments like this. When a client comes to you with...
