🤦🏻‍♂️ When clients realise they need you: A real-life client story

Hi Coach,

In early ‘21, a call from a prospective client stuck with me.

“Chris, we’ve tried to do this ourselves, but we can’t. We need your help. Can you help us?”

Six months before, this European B2B company held a private digital sales and marketing workshop.

The team left the workshop excited and motivated, convinced they could handle it independently.

But after a few months, they hit the same challenges many organisations face: they got in their own way.

Here’s what typically happens:

  1. Starting in the wrong place: They had passion and motivation but no clear starting point. Without a roadmap, their efforts quickly became confused and muddled.
  2. Varying levels of buy-in: As they progressed, they faced resistance from team members. Some pushed back on ideas, others got bogged down in quality debates, and overall, they struggled with alignment.
  3. Lack of structure: They didn’t know what order to follow or how to track their progress, leading to confusion and inefficiency.
  4. Decision-making delays: The organisation found it difficult to make decisions quickly. They tried to handle decisions independently but often got stuck, unable to move forward efficiently.

Ultimately, what started as an exciting new project filled with motivation and hope became a frustrating grind.

Fortunately, their founder is a sophisticated business owner and understands the value of coaching.

When they came to me, they were saying, “We need a coach. We need someone to help us do things in the right order, keep us accountable, make decisions swiftly, and ensure we’re aligned and progressing.”

After trying to go it alone for a few months, they realised what many eventually do: They needed expert guidance to achieve success at their highest potential.

This story isn’t unique.

Many teams start with great enthusiasm but soon realise the value of having an external coach to provide structure, accountability, and expert guidance.

Over to you:

It’s important to understand why your role is so critical.

It’s not just about your expertise in a particular topic, but your ability to be many steps ahead of your client.

You know the pitfalls to avoid, the correct order of operations, and how to keep the team aligned and motivated.

Your value lies in your foresight, structured approach, and capability to guide your clients toward achieving success at their highest potential.

This is why clients hire you—not just for what you know but also for your ability to lead them effectively and ensure they do their best work.

Reflect on this: How are you positioning yourself as a coach? Are you confident in your role, knowing that you bring far more than just subject matter expertise?

Your clients need you to be the guide who helps them navigate their journey, avoid common mistakes, make swift decisions, and stay on track for success.

Keep being that indispensable guide 🙏🏻

Hi Coach, I was recently a guest on Trevor Lee’s Better Presentations More Sales podcast, and it was a fantastic conversation you don’t want to miss. The episode is titled Don’t be a people pleaser, and we dove deep into the problem of people pleasing, especially in the context of delivering presentations. It’s a challenge I’ve been targeting, and there’s a lot I unpacked in this interview that I haven’t shared before. 🎧 Listen here: Don't be a people pleaser with Chris Marr One of the key...

Hi Coach, Thanks to those who responded with your thoughts on how you would handle the client situation I shared earlier. Now, I would like to explain how I actually responded and explain why this approach works. But first, let’s look at how a people pleaser and an authoritative coach might react differently. The people-pleaser response People pleasers often have a high need to be liked, and that can drive their behaviour in tough moments like this. When a client comes to you with...

Hi Coach, Let me set the scene for you. I was jumping into a session with a client, a sales and marketing strategy client I’ve been working with for six months. I think everything’s on track, and I'm prepared for a typical coaching session. But right out the gate, the client surprises me with... "Chris, we’re getting really frustrated. We’ve put in the work over the last six months, but we’re not seeing the results we expected. We’re nowhere close to feeling like we’re getting the ROI we...
